Domaine de la Vougeraie Vougeot Le Clos Blanc de Vougeot Monopole Premier Cru 2020

The Clos Blanc, a mythical, mystical vineyard, is adjacent to the Château du Clos de Vougeot. This golden triangle, surrounded on all sides by great reds, first offered its pure, golden sacrament to its spiritual fathers, the first monks of Cîteaux, in 1110. Known as "The White Vineyard", it is like a diamond set in the centre of rubies. Pale lemon and lime, with both a refined bouquet and intensity behind. "The inimitable Clos Blanc" says Sylvie. So much fruit detail here, both the sharper styles such as fresh apple, through a whole range of pears but stopping short of peach or anything tropical. All white fruit, excellent taffeta texture, great length. Barrel Sample: 92-95 Smooth and charming, showing coffee, toffee, spice and citrus flavors, this white reveals a complex and delicate, almost creamy, texture, while the bright structure keeps this defined and long on the finish. Here too there is a whiff of exotic character to the ripe aromas of pear liqueur, straw and a hint of matchstick. I like the seductive texture of the generously proportioned but very punchy middle weight flavors that display good length on the solidly complex finale. This isn't especially refined but there is good balance and mid-term development potential.Barrel Sample: 90-92
