Pillastro Primitivo
SKU: 6610
Description
Pillastro Primitivo is a hit with all who taste it. This Puglian red wine boasts more than 60 awards from top wine competitions, and has become a fan favorite - especially when meaty pasta dishes are on the table. Pillastro's popularity is hardly surprising when you consider the source. It hails from Cantine Due Palme, a winemaking cooperative with loads of awards to its name, including Gambero Rosso's Cooperative Cellar of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. It was founded by three-time Vinitaly Winemaker of the Year Angelo Maci in 1989. Nowadays, his daughter Melissa is President, while his grandson Francesco assists the new head winemaker, Vincenzo Campanella, in the cellar. Primitivo, a cousin of California's fruit-packed Zinfandel, is the godfather of southern Italian grapes. It's dark, rich and persuasively charming - and the Cantine Due Palme team excels at drawing out those qualities, insisting that all Pillastro's grapes be harvested from very old (flavor-boosting) vines. Tasting Notes: Full-bodied red wine with ripe raspberry and plum, supported by spiced raisin and fresh-brewed coffee notes. The palate offers sumptuous red and black fruit flavors, mingling with spicy oak and vanilla. Long, smooth finish. Food Pairings: Rich and hearty pasta dishes, pizza (esp. meaty), game, beef, lamb, and aged cheeses. If this vintage sells out, we will always substitute it with a wine of equal or greater value.
