When Darryl McCray, owner of Greenwich Village’s House of Nubian recently refinanced his mortgage, the thought of losing forty-thousand dollars during a storm didn’t cross his mind ... much less two storms. And yet, that’s what happened when the not-so-perfect storms of Hurricane Sandy combined with a Nor’easter, within 10 days of each other, striking Darryl’s under-insured personal property.
“I basically lost about $25,000 to $40,000 worth of inventory and have no coverage.”
Darryl cautions others to take time to understand what’s included with your insurance coverage. “Don't fall for the, ‘We will include your insurance in the mortgage payment.’ statement,” he says. Darryl adds, “I fell for it, and found out that ‘lender placed insurance’ only covers the structure and not the contents.”
“I threw out about 75 bags of sweats, teas, incense, books, jackets, hats and a bunch of stuff that I don't even know what it was because of the mud,” he said.
The destruction started with the flooring and ascended the wall, leaving unusable muddy, water-logged rugs and shelving.
Hurricane Sandy -- rushed into the streets of New York with winds reaching up to 175 mph October 29, dumping waist-high water in much of the city, knocking out electricity and phone services. Then, 10 days later a Nor’easter storm dropped several inches of snow throughout the metro as it was trying to regain composure from Sandy’s East coast punch.
Although The House of Nubian’s power and phone services have been restored, seventeen days after Sandy came ashore, much of the area is still without power and struggling to dry out.
Darryl reached out to his customer’s as soon as could, reassuring them that the House of Nubian’s warehouse is back to full power, and that his team is working very hard to ensure orders are processed as soon as possible. Fortunately, many of his items miraculously were not damaged and since Nubian is now getting back to normal and has resumed filling orders, they’re ready to get their business back on track and are looking forward to a busy holiday season.
