    Palmares is a 17th-century quilombo, a settlement of escaped slaves in northeast Brazil. In 1650, plantation slaves revolt and head for the mountains where they find others led by the aged seer, Acotirene. She anoints one who becomes Ganga Zumba, a legendary king. For years, his warriors hold off Portuguese raiders; then he agrees to leave the mountains in exchange for reservation land and peace. It's a mistake. Zumbi, a warrior whose mother was killed by Portuguese and who spent 15 years with the Whites, stays in the mountains to lead Palmares. In 1694, the Portuguese import a ruthless captain from São Paulo to lead an assault on the free Blacks. Can Zumbi keep Palmares free?

    This is a relatively close historical depiction of the resistance of the displaced Africans, mostly from Angola, to Brazil for use as slaves for the Portuguese. Diegues maintains historical accuracy of the quilombo(kilombo) called Palmares and the life the escaped Africans led and their struggle to lead that life far from the oppressive Portuguese. This is one of the few films which tells the story of African people actively resisting European slavers. Quilombo also follows the life of Zumbi, the death of Ganga Zumba,the initial leader of Palmares and Zumbi's rise to become the eventual leader of Palmares. For anyone looking at history and its true representation in film, this is a good start. It plays close to the vest in historical authenticity.

    Eyes on the Prize II: America at the Racial Crossroads , is a monumentally successful video achievement. With eyewitness accounts, archival film footage, government documents, and excellent retrospect interviewing, Eyes on the Prize II chronicles the African-American's human rights struggle in the United States from 1965 to 1985. This struggle, referred to as "the movement," is examined through eight individual episodes of approximately one hour each.
    Each episode critically examines a combination of topic, issue, individual, or organization, and the effect each element had on the momentum and direction of the civil rights movement. These programs not only seize the opportunity to explore many of the movement's traditional aspects (marches, boycotts, voting, organized protests, etc.), they take reportage two steps further. The aggressive coverage of events rarely discussed makes this series a truly meritorious accomplishment.

    Part 2: America at the Racial Crossroads 1965-1985

  • Episode 9 - Power! (1967-1968) Shows blacks taking control of their communities using ballot boxes, streets and schools as dominant platforms. Carl Stokes is elected the first black mayor of a major city and the Black Panther Party is formed in Oakland.
  • Episode 10 - The Promised Land (1967-1968) Examines the movement's increasing concern with economic issues. In the midst of organizing a Poor People's Campaign march in Washington D.C., Dr. King is called away to help striking workers in Tennessee. On April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Martin Luther King, Jr. is assassinated.
  • Episode 11 - Ain't Gonna Shuffle No More (1964-1972) Looks at the refusal of blacks to continue to conform to traditional stereotypes. A new generation begins to define itself, led by a greater sense of pride and awareness of its roots, culture and values.
  • Episode 12 - A Nation of Law? (1968-1971) Uncovers the levels of police harassment and brutality targeted at young black activists. At the same time inmates at New York's Attica prison organize a takeover in an effort to publicize intolerable conditions. For many, Attica becomes symbolic of prison conditions nationally.
  • Episode 13 - The Keys to the Kingdom (1974-1980) Chronicles the relationship between the law and popular struggles, and the efforts to inject substance into promises of equality. The movement's focus is on the keys to the kingdom: jobs and education.
  • Episode 14 - Back to the Movement (1979 To Mid-1980's) Concludes the series with an examination of the social and political changes that occurred in two cities - one Southern, one Northern - more than a decade after the civil rights movement.

    The late, great Dr. Wilson was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi in 1940. Familiarly referred to as Brother Amos, has provided the average person with an acute analysis of where we are and the things that affect us. He served as a council to energize our race and those in positions of influence as to how to carry out their leadership responsibilities. Dr.Wilson's activities transcended academia into the fields of business, owning and operating various enterprises in the greater New York area.
    Blueprint for Black Power details a master plan for the power revolution necessary for Black survival in the 21st century. Blueprints suggests that an African American/Caribbean/Pan-African bloc would be most potent for the generation and delivery of Black power in the United States and the World to counter White and Asian power networks. Wilson frames this imperative by deconstructing the U.S. elite power structure of government, political parties, think tanks, corporations, foundations, media, interest groups, banking and foreign investment particulars. Potentially strong Black institutions as the church, media and think tanks; industry; collectives such as investment clubs and credit unions; rotating credit associations such as Afrikan-originated esusu, tontine and partner are analyzed. Pan-Afrikanism, Black Nationalism, ethnocentrism and reparation are assessed, often misused and underused financial institutions as securities, mutual funds, stocks, bonds, underwriting, and incubators advocated, thus elucidating oft-negated opportunities for economic empowerment.
