The mat is deep enough so that the needles to not bottom-out and therefore breakage (when used properly) will be greatly reduced. Use the mat in place of the foam rubber traditionally used. Approximate size of mat surface is 3.25" x 5.25"

This hand-tooled, aluminum six-needle holder provides a way to easily needle felt over a large area. The tool screws apart approximately one inch from the bottom (the end with the six holes), six needles are held securely with the tool (yes, it comes with needles - 38-gauge all purpose needles).
