RESEARCH BRIEF
Menopause is an important time in a woman's life. Her body is going through changes that can affect her social life, her feelings about herself, and her productivity at work. In the past, menopause was surrounded by misconceptions and myths, but now it is recognized that menopause is a natural step in the aging process. Contrary to the old-fashioned view that life is all downhill after menopause, many women today find that the years after menopause offer new discoveries. Unfortunately, menopause does come with its share of challenges.
There are four stages in menopause and each has its own physical manifestations:
- Premenopause: Refers to a woman on the cusp of menopause. Her periods might have just started getting irregular, but she does not have the classic symptoms of hot flashes or vaginal dryness as yet. A woman in premenopause is usually in her mid-to-late 40's.
- Perimenopause: As a woman progresses on the path of menopause, her cycles may become wildly erratic and she may begin to experience hot flashes and vaginal dryness. This phase can last an average of four years; two years prior to her last period, and two years following the last period. The average age for this phase is 51. The term perimenopause refers to women who are experiencing the height of menopause symptoms.
- Menopause: Refers to the final menstrual period. After more than one year of no menstrual periods, any vaginal bleeding is now considered abnormal.
- Postmenopause: Refers to women who have been free of menstrual periods for at least one year.
