Strix varia

A medium sized owl, with yellow beak, atypical brown eyes, rounded head lacking ear tufts, the barred owl is named for its barred and spotted cinnamon brown, tan and white plumage. The barred owl resides in the Northern US into Canada and east of the Rockies, and is the counterpart to the spotted owl found in the western United States. It is the only typical owl in the eastern US have brown eyes. The barred owl is the commonest owl of the deep woods, and is highly maneuverable in dense forests. A vocal owl, its most common call has been phonetically translated as "who cooks for-you, who cooks for-you-all." In addition, this owl chortles, squeals, hoots, whistles, barks¿and makes the widest variety of sounds of all the North American owls. Its genus name comes from the Greek strizo, to screech.
