Orangutan Skeleton, Sumatra
Gorilla gorilla beringei
From a male Sumatra Orangutan, with an impressive sagittal crest. This species is larger than the Borneo Orangutan. The Malay word "orangutan" means old man of the forest. These animals have impressive canine teeth and the longest snout of the great apes. Restricted to the lowland swamp forests in Borneo, and a small part of Sumatra, there are only about 15,000 Borneo and 5,000 Sumantra Orangutans left alive in the wild. This endangered species verges on extinction.
