Maples, Autumn

This intimate view of maples in autumn was found at Governor Dodge State Park, near Dodgeville, Wisconsin. These are Black Maples (Acer nigrum), considered a close relative of the Sugar Maple. Like the Sugar Maple, the Black Maple is a source of sweet sap used to make maple syrup. These trees are part of an oak-hickory-maple forest typical of those found in the driftless region.
