COURSE DESCRIPTION

Nancy developed this process of using tapestry techniques (hachures and hatching) with a pick or two of perle cotton between passes to create a fabric that is soft and drapable and suitable for clothing. After an introduction to traditional tapestry you will learn how to weave hatching and hachures and then how to vary them to create a drapable fabric. You will learn how to choose the appropriate yarn, weave a variety of samples so you can choose the weight and look of the fabric you need for your project, calculate shrinkage accurately, (based upon your sample), calculate warp and weft quantities, create a design and transfer the design lines to your full scale cartoon. There's lots of planning and preparation, but the weaving progresses quickly and offers you the opportunity to create unusual and interesting one-of-a-kind fabric for clothing. Appropriate cutting, weaving and sewing tips are also included.

PREREQUISITES

It is assumed that you understand basic weaving terminology, know how to calculate warp for a project, dress a loom and weave plain weave. No tapestry weaving experience is necessary. Of course you will need to know how to sew in order to construct your garment.

MATERIALS NEEDED

You will need a 2 or 4-shaft loom, some 10/2 and 5/2 perle cotton and two different novelty yarns. After viewing the video it will be easier for you to select the appropriate novelty yarn which will be the major focus of your piece.
